Citypharma

昨日はＮちゃんとＮＨちゃんとパリのお金持ちエリア、サンジェルマンに行ってきました。目的は、化粧品等をかなり安く売っている薬局Citypharma！２～３割引きが多く、２個買うと安かったり、３個目が無料と、どこかマツキヨを思わせる雰囲気でした。フランスの薬局は日本と違って、お客さんが少なく、本当に買う必要がある時に行く感じですが、このCitypharmaはフランス人と観光客がこぞって大人買いしに来ます。

以前紹介したOrganixのシャンプーとリンスがもうじき切れるため、様々なウェブサイトで評価の高かったKloraneのシャンプーとリンスを購入。匂いは地味だけどナチュラルな感じ。まだ使っていないので何とも言えませんが、フランスの硬水とカルキ対策には良い商品であると聞いているので今後が楽しみです。

もう一点買ったのがＮＨちゃんお勧めのAveneのコールドクリームタイプのボディローション。今のところ肌がちゃんと潤って、更にとても優しい落ち着くような匂いが大変気に入りました。季節の変わり目は肌が一段と乾燥するので、これで乗り切ろうと思います！

Yesterday I went to the rich neighborhood of Paris, Saint Germain, with N and NH. We headed for Citypharma, a pharmacy which sells beauty care products super cheap! Most of the products are sold for 20-30% less, cheaper when bough in packages of 2, or the 3rd one for free. It reminded me of the Japanese pharmacy Matsu Kiyo (Matsumoto Kiyoshi). French pharmacies are different from those of Japan, there aren't many customers and they only go when they really need to buy something. However there were tons of French and tourists at Citypharma all buying in large amounts. 

The Organix shampoo and conditioner I introduced before will be gone soon so I bought shampoo and conditioner from Klorane which had great reviews from several websites. The smell is subtle but natural. I haven't used it yet so I can't say much, but I am excited to see how things go as I heard it's a great product to help deal with the French hard water and chlorine.

Another product I purchased was a cold cream type body lotion from Avene which NH recommended. For now it seems it moisturizes my skin and has a really soft calming smell which I am loving. Change in season can make my skin drier than usual but hopefully this will help me get through!

Bridesmaids

先週に引き続き、また大笑いしました！観てきたのは「Bridesmaids」。主人公のアニーは子供の頃からの大親友のリリアンのメイド・オブ・オナ―（花嫁付き添い人）になることに。しかし彼女より注目を浴びたがるリリアンの新しい友達、ヘレンもブライドメイド（花嫁介添人）として式の手伝いをします。ヘレンは何でも完璧にこなす金持ちの美人。それに反して、アニーは最近事業が失敗し、好きな人に利用される駄目女。二人はリリアンの大親友の座のために激しいバトルを繰り返し、男性が通常想像もしない女性の一面を見せます！

女性が（男性には）あまり見せない違った面を映し出す映画は本当に少ないので、私はこのジャンルをハリウッドでもっと追究してもらいたいと強く思います。

Continuing from last week, I laughed so hard again watching "Bridesmaids". The main character Annie is chosen to be the maid of honor for her best friend, Lilian. However Lilian's new friend Helen who wants more attention than Annie is chosen to be a bridesmaid and helps the wedding as well. Helen is a beautiful and rich woman who does everything perfectly. And then there is Annie, who lost her business recently and sadly gets used by a man she likes. The two battle for Lilian's best friend title and show a side of women that men would usually not imagine of!

There aren't many movies that show a different side to women (which are not shown to men often), so I hope Hollywood develops this genres more! 

ストッキング Pantyhose

海外に引っ越す日本人は良く、外国の製品が自分の体質・肌に合わないと化粧品・食品・薬を持っていくようにします。しかし、私は外国生活が長かったため、薬は日本製だと逆に弱めだから効かなかったり、食品も外国の物で全く問題ないので、日本の物はほとんど持ってこなかったです。基礎化粧品は詰め替えができるので、日本のをまだ使っていますが、減ってきたので少しづつフランスの製品に変えています。しかし、考えもしなかった製品が着いてから必要だと痛感しました。それはストッキング！私の肌の色に全く合いません・・・！かなり白いか、微妙なグレーっぽい白、それか茶色過ぎたりと、黄色みがかかった私の肌に合うストッキングを探すのが本当に大変。しょうがないので黒いストッキングを履くようにしていますが、どうしても肌色のストッキングを履かないといけない時は足だけが浮いている感じがして恥ずかしく感じます・・・皆さんも外国へ引っ越す際にはご注意下さいませ。

Japanese who move overseas often try to take makeup, food, and medicine with them thinking that foreign products won't be suitable for their body or skin. I on the other hand had lived overseas for a long time so Japanese medicine are actually too mild and won't work for me. I also have no problem whatsoever with local food so I hardly brought anything from Japan. I still do use Japanese makeup as they are refillable but I have been gradually changing to French products. However there is one product which I never even thought of was necessary until I arrived... That is pantyhose! It just doesn't match my skin color...! It's either too white, has an odd grayish white color to it, or too brown. It's really hard to find pantyhose that matches my olive skin. I wear black pantyhose now because I have no choice but when I need to wear skin color ones, but I feel embarrassed thinking my legs look strange... I recommend everyone to be careful too when moving overseas. 

重箱の隅をつつく Nitpick

昨日、翻訳をしていたら知らない諺、「重箱の隅をつつく」という表現が出てきました。私は知らない諺や表現があると英訳のみではなく、日本語の意味もしっかり調べた上で英訳することを心がけています。何故かと言うと、自分の勉強になることは大前提ですが、もっと的確な英訳があるか自分の頭にある辞書と確認したいため。しかし今回は辞書に出てきたNitpickが適当であったため、そのように訳しました。

さて、知らなかったのですが、「重箱の隅を楊枝で穿る」とちょっと違う言い方もあるようで、両方の意味はと言うと、重箱の真ん中にあるご馳走には目もくれず、隅ばかりつくこと。面白い表現ですね。そこで少し文章を練ってみて、私もこれに沿った新しい英訳の諺を作ってみました：To pick at the crust of a sandwichサンドウィッチの耳をつつく（＾＾）

Yesterday when I was translating, I came upon a proverb I didn't know, "pick the corners of a tiered food box". When I find a proverb or saying that I don't know, I try to fully understand the meaning in Japanese and not only look for the translation. Mainly for my studies but also to check if there is a more accurate translation in the dictionary in my head. However this time the translation "nitpick" in the dictionary was appropriate so I went with that.

Now, I didn't know this but there is also another way to say this proverb, "scoop the corners of a tiered food box with a tooth pick". Both phrases talk about the mannerism of not even looking at the feast in the middle but picking at the corners. I think it's a really interesting phrase so I thought of a phrase myself that goes along with same line as this proverb: To pick at the crust of a sandwich :)   

シェールブールの雨傘 The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

私は全てのジャンルの音楽が好きで、ラップからクラシック、多くのアメリカ人が少し古くさいと思われているカントリーミュージックも聴きます。そして前から好きだったのですが、最近一日に何回も聴いているのが日本で言う「シャンソン」。日本では「シャンソン」はフランスの歌謡曲のイメージが強いですが、実はシャンソンはフランス語では歌という意味なので、ロック・ラップ・ポップ全てがシャンソンになります。

エディット・ピアフやイヴ・モンタンはもちろん大好きですが、最近特にお気に入りはカトリーヌ・ドヌ―ブ 主演の「シェールブールの雨傘」。この映画は台詞が全て歌となっているのですが、主題歌がとても美しく、儚げで聴いているだけで涙が出ます。１７才のジュヌヴィエーヴ（カトリーヌ・ドヌ―ブ）は母親とシェールブール市の雨傘店で働き、彼女はギィという恋人がいるが母親に反対されている。そんな中、ギィは戦争に召集されますが、実は出兵する前にジュヌヴィエーヴは赤ちゃんを宿します・・・彼女はギィを待つが、もう待つことができず、自分の子供として育てるという裕福な宝石商と結婚することに。時が経ち、ギィも結婚し、お互い違う人生を歩みますが二人はまた出会うことに。その二人の切ないラストシーンでは二人が愛を誓い合っているシーンと同じ曲が流れます。若すぎた愛、悲痛な戦争、永遠に褪せない想い出。「シェールブールの雨傘」はまさにフランスの名作だと思います。

I love all genre of music from rap to classic, even country music which many Americans think is outdated. Recently I have been listening several times a day to what is classified as "chanson" in Japan which I have always loved. In Japan "chanson" has an image of old French songs but actually the word chanson means song in French so all genres such as rock, rap, pop is actually chanson.

I of course love Edith Piaf and Ives Montand, but my recent favorite is "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" starring Catherine Deneuve. In this movie, all lines are consisted of songs and the theme song is so beautiful and fragile that it brings tears to my eyes when listening. 17 year old Genevieve (Catherine Deneuve) works in an umbrella shop in Cherbourg city with her mother and she has a boyfriend, Guy, but her mother opposes this. Guy gets drafted to war and before he leaves Genevieve conceives a baby... She waits for Guy's return but she can't wait anymore and she marries a wealthy jeweler who promises to raise the baby as his own. Time passes by, Guy marries as well and they lead separate lives but they meet again. The last scene uses the same song as when they were promising their eternal love. A love too young, devastating war, and memories that will never fade way. I believe that "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" is truly a French masterpiece.  

Chez Janou

今日はソルボンヌ（パリ大学）で一緒だったイスラエル人の友達３人とランチに行きました。様々なサイトで美味しいと絶賛されていたChez Janou。お洒落で有名なマレ地区から少し離れているにも関わらず、着いたらほぼ満席状態。ここではプロヴァンス料理を売りとしており、私は１３．５ユーロのランチメニュー、ズッキーニと山羊のチーズ、そしてステーキを注文。プロヴァンス料理はフランス南部、プロヴァンス地方の料理であり、ニンニク、オリーブ油、ハーブを頻繁に使います。ステーキは外国の牛肉だから仕方ないと思うのですが、私には若干固すぎました・・・だけど前菜があまりにも美味しかったので全く気にしません！通常は山羊のチーズが使われている料理は重く感じますが、ここのチーズはとてもサッパリで胃にも全く負担を感じませんでした。山羊のチーズは臭くて重いから嫌いな友達もこれならいけるともう一人の友達のプレートから分けてもらっていました。
  
ウエイトレスも笑顔がとっても可愛い女の子で、サービスも良かったのでまたリピートしたいと思います。

Today I went for lunch with 3 of my Israeli friends from the Sorbonne (University of Paris). We went to Chez Janou which had rave reviews from many websites. The restaurant is a tad away from the famous and fashionable Marais district but it was still packed when we arrived. Their attraction is their Provence cuisine and so I chose the 13.50 euros lunch menu consisting of zucchini with goat cheese and a steak. Provence cuisine comes from the Provence area which is in the south of France and uses garlic, olive oil, and herbs often in their dishes. The steak was slightly tough for my liking but I suppose it can't be helped because that's how beef in other countries are. However I didn't mind that at all because the entree was so delicious! Usually dishes with goat cheese tend to be too heavy, but the cheese here was light and didn't feel heavy on the stomach at all. One of my friend hates goat cheese because of the smell and the heaviness but she said she is more than fine with the cheese here and was having some from another friend's plate.

The waitress was a sweet girl with a great smile and service was great so I think I will be a repeating customer.

ボツリヌス菌 Clostridium botulinum

久々にＮちゃんとＮＨちゃんの３人で集まったのですが、ふと話題に出たのがボツリヌス菌。私はなんとなく聞いたことがあるのですが、調べたところ、この菌が作り出すボツリヌス毒素は何と０．５kgで全人類を滅ぼすことができるよう！しかもこのボツリヌス菌は日本の蜂蜜の５％には入っているとのこと！だけど大人には影響がなく、食べても問題ないのですが、１才未満の子供は免疫がないため蜂蜜を食べないように厚生省が１９８７年に指定したようです。

そこで、英語とフランス語のwikipediaでも調べたところ、日本のように年齢の指定はされていなかったのですが、やはり赤ちゃんには蜂蜜を与えないようにと書いてありました。自然の物だし、まろやかな甘さだから赤ちゃんが喜ぶとついつい思いがちですが、このような怖い事実があったとは驚きました。

It's been awhile since N, NH, and I gathered together and while we were talking we came upon the topic of clostridium botulinum bacterium. I have heard of the name but when I searched more about it, I found out that apparently the WHOLE POPULATION can be wiped out with just 0.5kg of the toxins created from this bacterium! Later, I further found out that the bacterium can be found in 5% of the honey in Japan! It does not have any affect on adults however in 1987 the Ministry of Health & Welfare of Japan has specified that honey should not be given to babies below the age of 1 as they are still not immune to it.

I checked wikipedia in English and French and although they have not specified an age, both sites said that honey should not be given to infants. I was very surprised because we tend to think that babies may like it since it's from nature and has a mellow sweetness but in reality it can be a very dangerous food.
